I am so happy that The StarPhoenix sent me on a tour up north with two Riders and the Grey Cup. There were a few firsts for me. First time on an 8-passenger plane. First time holding the Grey Cup.First time traveling to Stony Rapids - it’s really far north!First time having a written piece published in the SP.It was an amazing learning experience - I found out that under tight deadlines I can miraculously write an article in ~an hour and power through ~1500 photos, edit, caption and file them in half an hour. The people I met up north were so kind and lovely. It was great to be part of putting smiles on everyone’s faces by bringing the Grey Cup to their communities. My favourite moment was when a boy saw the Grey Cup sitting in Robertson’s Trading Post. He walked up slowly with his little brother trembling in awe of getting to see it up close.I am also very happy that I survived the 10 take offs and landings in the 8-passenger plane with no washroom. Our pilots were awesome.Click here to read my story.

This past year I’ve been shooting for Bridges, The StarPhoenix weekly, and once a week I get to shoot for the daily. Here are a few of my favourite shots from 2013. Check out my full gallery here: Best of 2013 by Michelle Berg

I’ve been shooting for the StarPhoenix every Sunday since the beginning of June.
Here’s what I came up with last Sunday: Egypt protest, Hilltops season opener and Selena Gomez.
I also shot softball and drove out to Pike Lake (only to find the subject wasn’t there). Fundays at the Phoenix!

The Lepage family: Danielle, Julien, Sophie and Olivier.

I had so much fun taking photos of my friends and their twins at the Lepage farm near St. Denis, SK. Other than Johnny (the horse) photo bombing me, Olivier’s grumpiness and almost being trampled by a herd of angry cows, it was a pretty successful shoot!

Also having shot their maternity photos there, I hope to continue this tradition each year to watch the family grow!

It’s been a long time since I swayed from my typical news photography, and I’m glad I did - I love this family.

I was intimidated to photograph 90 year old internationally recognized abstract artist Eli Bornstein but am quite happy with how they photos turned out.

I took some photos of his show “An Art at the Mercy of Light” at the Mendel then drove to his beautiful home he built on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River in 1969 where I had the pleasure of meeting his family, and seeing his works-in-progress in his studio.

He was a very inspiring, happy and healthy man - I still can’t believe he is 90.
